SOCIAL IMPACT & Community projects

Christopher Ireland’s creative advocacy work gives voice to those rarely seen in the spotlight—treating their stories with the same artistic rigour as his commercial practice. Funded through grants and public/private partnership.

PROJECTS:

  • Hundreds of Australians die each year from exposure to the asbestos fibre. This tiny fibre is responsible for several insidious and incurable lung diseases which eventually rob the patient of the very capacity to draw breath.

Breathing is the basis of life. The strength and resilience of the asbestos fibre is the undoing of many who breathe it in. Its legacy is long lasting- the dread it engenders, the suffering, the contemplation of what lies ahead. Asbestos is no longer the “wonder fibre”.

For the asbestos widow, moving forward requires a strength and resilience of its own.

Breathe was my first major body of work and made a national tour of Australia starting at The Australian Centre for Photography. It awakened me to the potency of photography as a vehicle to drive social change.

  • “Does that camera record sound?”
It’s a question I’m asked more than once, standing somewhere between the first and tenth floor of Greenway, a Community Housing high-rise in Kirribilli.

“If it did,” I ask, “what would you say?”

One woman tells me she’s fled violence and found solace in art. A man with one arm tells me he’s lucky. Another says he hasn’t spoken to his son in years. These stories were there long before me—but slowly, over a decade, trust grew. Most residents eventually volunteered their time in exchange for a portrait. Some hoped their image and words might reach beyond these walls.

Though I’m not a resident, I became a witness. My legitimacy came not through assumption, but through time, presence, and care—offering my craft in exchange for their truth. This became a collaboration. Curiosity was met with candour, and a quiet generosity that stayed with me.

One portrait became hundreds. One sentence became a book. A year became a decade.

All Things Considered is a portrait of life inside Greenway—shaped by mutual trust and an urge to be seen.
    Premiered March 2024, Kirribilli NSW.
